Sedation Dentistry

Oral sedation dentistry is a common technique used to help ease patients’ fears. The technique is simple and requires no needles. The medications create such a comfortable experience that most patients do not remember the visit; it is as if they slept through the treatment. In reality, oral sedation dentistry maintains a level of consciousness in the patient for safety and cooperation.

One of the major benefits of sedation dentistry is that people often feel like their dental procedure lasts only a few minutes, when in fact it might have taken hours to perform. Therefore, complex dental procedures such as smile makeovers or extensive rebuilding procedures that normally require multiple visits can often be performed in fewer appointments.

If you are reluctant to change the appearance of your smile because you are afraid or anxious about undergoing long or complicated dental procedures, sedation dentistry can make you feel comfortable during the treatment process and help you achieve a smile you can be proud of.

Sleep dentistry is safe. Our team is trained on how to administer the sedative and how to monitor the effect on you during the procedure. That monitoring is constant and ensures you are not aware of any pain or discomfort. We are able to control the sedation process from start to finish and ensure you are in capable hands the entire time.

One of the questions patients ask us before undergoing any type of sleep dentistry in North York is what will happen after the dental work is completed. Our first step is to begin reversing the effects of the sedation. Our team will gently wake you with the use of fresh oxygen. Many patients feel as if they are waking up from a sound sleep. As the sedation begins to wear off, you will gradually become aware of your surroundings.

It’s normal for patients to feel a little groggy after sedation dentistry. That’s why we want to monitor your condition for 20 to 30 minutes after the procedure. Before you leave our office, we want to confirm that you are aware and alert.

We highly recommend that you have a friend come along for your procedure. That will ensure you don’t have to drive home and will provide a little more time for any residual effects from the sedation to subside.

If you have never used sedation for a dental procedure before, our team will be happy to walk through the process with you and answer any questions that are on your mind. Our goal is to ensure every patient understands what is involved with their treatment, how they can prepare, and what to expect afterwards.

We Believe in Your Smile!

Hello Smile Centre Family,

We are working hard at keeping all of our patients and team members updated as we try to adapt to this daily-changing situation.

SCHEDULED APPOINTMENTS:

As you know, at this time, all elective procedures - including general dentistry and hygiene appointments - are still being suspended for at least the next few weeks. If you have an appointment in April, you can consider it cancelled. Our team is trying hard to reach out during this week as well. At this time, we are not rescheduling surgery appointments or regular dental and hygiene appointments until we have a better grip on when things will be returning to “normal”.

We look forward to seeing you back at the Smile Centre once we’re able to open our doors again. We will be adding extra time to accommodate the need that has been created by this unforeseen interruption; don’t worry! Your health is important to us and we will work overtime to ensure all our patients are accommodated.

EMERGENCY APPOINTMENTS:

Under the guidelines from the Ministry of Health and RCDSO, we must screen carefully and minimize patient contact, but we are accommodating emergency patients on a case-by-case basis. If you have a dental emergency, or think you may be experiencing symptoms that could become urgent, please don’t hesitate to contact us. We are monitoring messages regularly; the easiest way to reach any of our clinic locations is via text message.

A dental emergency consists of severe pain, swelling, uncontrolled bleeding or infection. If you think you are experiencing an emergency, please send us a detailed message and we will get back to you as soon as we can. We have been working hard to find a way to help as many people as possible with minimal contact and still provide optimal care, so we are introducing virtual consultations with a dentist in order to be able to speak to you face-to-face.

We are currently seeing patients at our Maple location only!

WE ARE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER:

We are all in this together. We will come away from this situation stronger and more appreciative than ever of the tiny conveniences that we all take for granted every day. Perhaps more family togetherness will become the new normal; maybe this will all be a lesson in taking a step back and appreciating the things we have around us.

We Believe in Your SMILE,

Your Smile Centre Team
